Title: Peer Support Specialist

FLSA Status: Full-time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

Schedule: Evenings, Sunday to Thursday from 4:00p – Midnight

Purpose:

The Peer Support Specialist is a person with "lived experience" who has been trained to support those who struggle with mental health, psychological trauma, or substance use. Their personal experience of these challenges provides Peer Support Specialists with expertise that professional training cannot replicate. This position provides peer support in a residential program and will assist recipients to articulate their goals for recovery, learn and practice new skills, help them monitor their progress, support them in their treatment, model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies, support them to advocate for themselves to obtain effective services, and develop and implement recovery plans.

Primary responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:
Knowledge of
o Mental Illness, including potential needs and challenges.
o Stages of Change, Motivational Interviewing, Co-Occurring Disorders.

Ability to
o Make recovery and stability attainable and attractive by sharing your personal story and living well in recovery; be a role model and mentor
o Bring hope to individuals with mental illness and help them discover their strengths; support them through challenges that arise; act as an ally
o Help recipients develop and articulate their personal recovery plans; provide feedback on progress and potential roadblocks

Education and Experiences:

The Peer Support Specialist must qualify as a Mental Health Practitioner as follows:

• Holds a Bachelor’s degree in one of the behavioral sciences or related fields from an accredited college or university and has at least 2,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to persons with mental illness OR
• Has at least 4,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to persons with mental illness AND
• Completion of DHS Training to qualify as a Certified Peer Support Specialist.

Additional Requirements:
• Valid Class 'D' Driver's License is required, reliable vehicle, satisfactory driving record and necessary insurance.
• Current CPR / First Aid Certification or ability to complete CPR course paid by Guild within 90 days of employment.
• Must be ambulatory and able to negotiate stairways.
• The ability to lift and carry heavy weights (e.g., moving household furnishings, carrying groceries) that could be up to or even exceed 25 pounds.
• Must not be actively receiving services from Guild Incorporated and must not have received services within the last two years.

The salary range for this position is between $22.00 - $24.00 per hour. The range reflects the minimum and maximum salary for the position. Compensation will depend on the candidate’s professional experience, skills, and relevant education, training, and certifications.
