Fire Captain

North Central Fire Protection District

Assessment Center: The week of September 15-16, 2025

Fire Captain

This is a non-exempt, sworn safety role under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The Captain is assigned to one of the District’s six fire stations and supervised by an on-duty Battalion Chief. Fire Captains are responsible for the overall performance of their assigned company and are expected to exercise independent judgment in both emergency operations and routine assignments. While typically working a 56-hour shift schedule, Captains may also serve in 40-hour staff roles and may be required to work overtime depending on staffing needs or emergency responses.

Job Description:

Fire Captains supervise all activities of their assigned fire company or staff function, including planning and executing operational programs, ensuring crew readiness, and leading tactical response. Captains are expected to maintain proficiency in fireground leadership, pumping, driving, and compliance with applicable certifications.

Minimum Requirements:

• Completed probation as Fire Captain or 3 years’ experience as a permanent Fire Engineer (any agency).
• CA SFM: Firefighter I/II, Company Officer, Instructor I
• ICS 200, 700, 800
• High School/GED + 30 college units

Desirable Qualifications:

• Rural fire district experience
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Company Officer 2A–2E, Instructor 1A
• Bilingual
• Leadership, reliability, ethics, and sound judgment

Lateral Fire Captains:

· Are eligible for a onetime bonus of $20,000, that will be awarded and deposited into the employee’s 457(b) deferred compensation account upon vesting after five (5) years of continuous service . This bonus is contingent upon meeting all eligibility requirements and will be administered in accordance with applicable plan and IRS regulations.

Fire Engineer

$68,840 – $81,232

Increases to $87,880 with five-step pay scale

Fire Captain

$82,194 – $89,400

Increases to $99,907 with five-step pay scale

Note: This position currently follows a four-step pay range. Effective January 1, 2026, the pay structure expands to five steps, allowing for increased earnings at the top step.

• Vacation Leave – 40-hr: 10–18 days/year; 56-hr: 5–9 shifts/year
• Sick Leave – 40-hr: 8 hrs/month; 56-hr: 12 hrs/month
• Health Coverage – 80% District contribution, up to $1,900/month
• Holiday Pay – 40-hr: 88 hrs; 56-hr: 1.5x for holidays worked
• Retirement – 401(a) Defined Benefit Plan

• 14.00% for safety employees
• 13.30% for non-safety employees
