Under limited supervision, performs a wide variety of routine clerical and administrative support work for the Municipal Court. Prepares monthly and annual state/city reporting. Reviews and reconciles financial information. Secures information for the judge(s). Has direct communication with witnesses, defendants, police officers, attorneys (and staff), solicitor's office staff, and many others. Records case disposition and court orders following court proceedings. Provides assistance to the front office with customer service. Answers inquiries made by phone, email, and in person.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Works closely with staff in ongoing assessment and improvement of programs and services.
  • Prepares monthly and annual state/city reporting.
  • Review and reconcile financial information to ensure accuracy, financial integrity, and compliance. Prepares jury trial docket or calendar of cases to be called, using computer and word processor.
  • Sett-off debt management
  • Examines legal documents submitted to court for adherence to law or court procedures, prepares case folders, and posts, files, or routes documents.
  • Explains procedures or forms for parties in the case.
  • Secures information for judges, and contacts witnesses, attorneys, and litigants to obtain information for court, and instructs parties when to appear in court.
  • Records minutes of court proceedings, using a recording system or shorthand. Records case disposition, court orders, and arrangements for payment of court fees.
  • Provides assistance to the front office with customer service. Answer inquiries made by phone, email, and in person. Collects court fees or fines and records amounts collected when needed.
  • Handles submitting court appeals.
  • Coordinates with Behavioral Health Services all ADSAP referrals.
  • Serves as a Ministerial Recorder; the duties include setting and accepting bonds and recognizances; issues summonses, subpoenas, arrest warrants and search warrants.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and machinery including a personal computer system, calculator, typewriter, telephone, copy and fax machine, recording system, dictating machines, tape recorder, etc.
  • Uses a variety of tools and supplies including diagrams, entry books, file cabinets, pens, pencils, charts, forms, programs, schedules, etc.; and a variety of computer software including word processing and specialized court software.
  • Is required to fill in for other positions within the department if needed.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalent with course work in typing and/or general office practices with three (3) years of related court experience in clerical, secretarial, paralegal, or administrative work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Licenses or Certifications High School Diploma/GED. Required to pass the certification exam provided by South Carolina Court Administration within 1 year.
